The show itself is of course magnificent for the most part. Innovative, exciting and very well acted. A landmark in modern TV drama, despite a brief drop -off in quality in some of the late afternoon episodes. The DVD picture quality is wonderfully sharp, and the sound is nicely crisp.

Important to note if you are buying this package having not seen the show before (having heard about it from others but too late to join in watching it on TV) that there are spoilers all over the presentation. the enclosed booklet includes short summaries of every episode and not much else, so don’t look at it until you’ve seen the whole show. Similarly the menus feature clips from the show which is nice to watch if you aren’t worried about information being given away, as the clips on the menu for each disc tend to reveal major plot points.

Also, the DVD extras are actually pretty poor. The alternative ending is dull and obviously only shot to keep the true ending secret. The teaser for season 2 comprises only Kiefer Sutherland talking in very vague terms about the general concept of 24, with no real information about the second series.

Worst of all is the fact that the footage on the discs is only the footage that was originally broadcast IN THE US. In the UK the broadcast footage included an extra couple of minutes for each of the episodes 7pm - 12pm. This footage contained scenes that was cut from the US broadcast for adverts, whereas in the UK 24 was shown on the BBC where there are no adverts.

These scenes ranged from nice additions to important points: one cut scene had a major impact on the crucial events in the final episode and another even greatly improved the climactic battle between Jack and the bad guys.

Fox haven’t included this footage on the DVD versions in either the UK or the US, meaning that us poor Brits have scenes that we miss and this has led to calls for a recall and replacement with the full footage. For the US viewer, this is actually worse, in that you are never going to see these great scenes. There are no running time issues on DVD, unlike on TV, so why not let those fans willing to pay for the box set have bonus footage integrated into their box sets?

Bizarrely, this doesn’t affect the VHS British release of 24, only the DVD, so if you want those extra scenes you’ll need a PAL compatible TV and VCR.

Why not drop Fox an email congratulating them on making such a great show and asking for them to include the full footage as was broadcast on the BBC?

It’s just after midnight at the Bauer home. They’re getting ready for bed when Jack gets a phone call asking him to report to work at the Counter Terrorism Unit in Los Angeles. There he’s briefed on a plot to assassinate Presidential candidate David Palmer. Meanwhile, his daughter Kim has snuck out of the house to meet some guys who are bad news. His wife Terri is finding trouble searching for Kim. And Palmer is facing a crisis of his own concerning something in his family’s past he didn’t even know about. It’s going to be a long day for everyone.

This thriller series is innovative. Each episode represents just one hour in the day. I wasn’t sure they could pull if off, but the writers managed to keep all the plots going and make the gaps between seeing characters believable. It quickly turned into a weekly addiction that had me glued to my seat and dreading commercials more then normal. Some of the plots loose steam in the afternoon, but it builds up tension again for the climax, which was the best hour of television last season, period.

Unfortunately, this set wasn’t all it could have been. They removed the “previously on 24″ recaps, which are very useful if you just want to pop a random disc into the machine. Ironically, they also don’t have a play all feature, which would go well with no recaps. The worst thing, in my opinion, is the lack of chapter breaks in each episode. The season 1 intro (on the last disc) is ok and includes a mention of this season. Of course, at this point, we’re far beyond anything they would have told us in the set. The best feature is the alternate ending. While (to my surprise) I prefer the original, it’s nice to see what might have been. As you would expect, the picture and audio quality are top notch.

It’s a shame this great show didn’t get the DVD treatment it deserved. I’m willing to overlook the lack of extras because of timing, but the lack of the recap & chapter breaks really bothers me. Even so, it’s a good set of a great show worth using to catch up or remember this innovative program.

Female Prisoner #701 - Scorpion stars the beautiful and talented Japanese actress Meiko Kaji, best known for playing Lady Snowblood and singing “Flower of Carnage,” the title song to Kill Bill. This movie has everything to be a fine example of the “women in prison” film genre: stabbings, shootings, rape, lesbian sex, torture (scaldings, beatings, burnings, women hung by ropes from their elbows) and lots and lots of female nudity. Good clean family entertainment. What more could you want?

Uttering as few words as possible, Nami Matsushima (played by the stunningly beautiful Meiko Kaji) dispenses with the pleasantries and builds a reasonably impressive body count by the end of “Female Prisoner 701: Scorpion,” one of the premiere films in the women’s prison genre of films.

Natsuyagi is a cop looking to move ahead in his life, and money, after all, is the root of all evil. He hatches a scheme to use his lovely girlfriend, Nami, to lure the local mafia bosses into a scheme. But when the gang feels something’s amiss, they escort Nami into a back room and rape her. Breaking in, Natsuyagi realizes he finally has what he wants: ignoring his fallen girlfriend, he convinces the mob that he can make all of their problems go away if they pay him off. They agree, and Natsuyagi has Nami thrown into prison … where she undergoes the obligatory beatings, teasing, and other forms of degradation so common to ‘girls behind bars’ films.

What makes “Scorpion” different is the fact that Director Shunya Ito - in his debut film - decided to ride the fine line between art and trash. He combines the best elements of the vindictive woman’s feature along with artsy lighting in order to achieve the effect of a car crash: the viewer really hates to slow down and watch, but there really must be something to see here, right? The violence is gratuitous, if not psychedelic, at times, but it all manages to flesh out (pun intended) before Nami manages to finally break out of prison and go on her murderous rampage, taking out the mobsters one-by-one until her final showdown with the unsuspecting Natsuyagi.

Also, in Kaji’s graceful hands, Nami isn’t so much a victim as she is an antihero, not at all unlike Clint Eastwood in Sergio Leone’s spaghetti westerns. The viewer is pulled into this world by means of a very beautiful woman who refuses to be a ‘prisoner’ to the genre. Instead, she’s defiant and calculating at every turn, refusing to comply with the warden’s demands of good behavior. She challenges every authority, instituting her own code of justice which applies to everyone: her fellow inmates, the prison guards, and even the police outside. Uncompromising in her dedication, she ignores the acts she endures for the sake of focusing on one sole objective: revenge.

… and that’s an act she takes with complete seriousness.

NOTE: Apparently, there is an issue associated to subtitling, as has been referred by other reviewers. I had no problem whatsoever, but I would add that the film would not play with the correct aspect ratio of 2:35:1 in my American DVD player. I did have to watch the film in my Region Free player, and I did not experience any problems.

Loved the movie. That said, I was confused on what the differences were on the 3 DVD versions, but found some details that I’ve posted below. As for me, I’m going with this two-disc unrated version.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Knocked Up! Click Here

Basic extras — available on all (both R-rated and Unrated Editions):

- Deleted and Extended Scenes

Buy,Download, Or Stream Knocked Up! Click Here

- Gag Reel

-”Directing the Director” (Capote director Bennett Miller stops by to help Apatow get the job done)

- Line-O-Rama (Tons of alternate takes)

- Audio commentary with Judd Apatow, Seth Rogen and Bill Hader

- Roller Coaster Featurette

Goodies available only on the Unrated releases:

- MORE Deleted and Extended Scenes (some pretty raunchy ones, reportedly)

- Topless Scene: “Web Design”

And finally, extras available only on this 2-disc Unrated version:

- Judd Apatow’s Video Diaries

- Finding Ben Stone (A mock casting session)

- Stripper Confidential (Rogen and Paul Rudd wade through some Sin City salaciousness)

- Even MORE Deleted and Extended Scenes / Gag Reel Footage!

- Another topless Scene: “Restaurant”

- Katherine Heigl’s Audition Tape

.. “and more” (I’m really hoping for another “You know how I know you’re gay?” extended scene like in 40-year-old Virgin)

Director Judd Apatow makes another R rated comedy with a heart. He makes characters that are real and we can relate to with raunchy humor, however he slyly wraps it up with a message about responsibility as he did in 40 Year Old Virgin with celibacy.

A hilarious, real, and ultimately touching film with a message and one of the best of 2007.

This is one of the highest rated films of the year it earned a 91% positive rating out of 177 critics reviews.

Heres info I found on the dvd on movieweb:

According to The Digital Bits, Judd Apatow’s box office smash Knocked Up is going to be coming to DVD in 4 different versions on September 25 from Universal Studios Home Entertainment.

There is going to be an “R-rated widescreen, Unrated (and Unprotected) widescreen and Full Frame (that will sell for $29.98 each) and a 2-disc special edition in Unrated (and Unprotected) widescreen (that will sell for $30.98), as well as an DVD/HD-DVD Combo version of the Unrated edition (that will sell for $39.98).”

DVD Features:

- Audio commentary with writer/director Judd Apatow, executive producer/star Seth Rogen and actor Bill Hader

- Deleted scenes

- Extended and alternate scenes

- Gag reel

- “Line-O-Rama” Featurette

- “Roller Coaster Doc” Featurette

Ever since hearing “Show Me The Buffet”, I’ve loved John Pinette’s stuff. The cd was hilarious and only had one use of profanity, showing comedy can be funny and clean. “I Say Nay Nay” is John’s first dvd, and the material is mostly different from the cd. There are a few similar stories, but not many. The only extra on the dvd is a 5 minute clip of a much younger John on TV doing the “You Go Now” bit from the cd. The only problem is John uses a lot more language in this one. I sat down with the kids to watch it because we all love his cd and I was a little shocked. Still, John’s a funny guy and you’ll laugh a lot with this routine.

I say Nay Nay and I’m Starving have too much of the same bits. If you buy one you don’t need the other. However alone either one is great.

THE GATHERING STORM is a compelling look at the lion in wilderness. The lion, of course, is Winston Churchill (Albert Finney) and the wilderness is the political exclusion he endured circa 1938-39. It was during those years that Germany rearmed at an alarming rate; England slept while Adolf Hitler plotted. It was also a time that found Churchill gadflying from opposition to Indian independence to futilely warning England, and the world, about the newly dangerous Nazi Germany.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Gathering Storm! Click Here

Such is the political context TGS takes place in, but the movie devotes most of its 90-some minutes to domestic life at Chartwell, Churchill’s country estate and the place he amassed and assessed the intelligence on Germany fed to him by a variety of sources, most notably Foreign Office official Ralph Wigram (Linus Roache). Vanessa Redgrave plays Churchill’s wife Clemmie, a woman who was as much a match for her famous husband as Redgrave is a match for the superb Finney.

THE GATHERING STORM won’t teach you all that much about English politics on the eve of World War II, or even that much about Churchill the politician. As a character study of a complex politician it’s simply brilliant, and strongly recommended.

When I first heard that Albert Finney would play Sir Winston Churchill in “The Gathering Storm” I was disappointed and wondered how he could pull it off. Still I watched the movie and the first appearance of Mr. Finney on screen as the venerable and legendary British hero put all of my fears to rest. Winston was alive again. The same can be said for the performance of Vanessa Redgrave as Clementine Churchill.

The movie is filled with facts about Churchill’s activities leading up to war with Germany, his intelligence activities and his relationship with his wife and family. The film is a must have for all Churchillophiles.

Most of us know at least one person who can compartmentalize her or his life, separating business from pleasure, career from family, etc. Such people have exceptional focus and determination. Brilliantly portrayed by Gene Hackman, Harry Caul is such a person. (Even his girlfriend Amy, played by Teri Garr, does not know where he lives.) Harry is an expert technician who is retained to conduct electronic surveillance of those identified by his clients. In effect, he is a high-tech private investigator. What he records becomes evidence of illegal, unethical, or immoral behavior. Harry has no personal interest in the private lives he invades surreptitiously. But then he accepts an assignment and begins to suspect that the subjects of his surveillance will be murdered. The “compartments” in his life which Harry has so carefully separated begin to merge (albeit gradually) and he begins to have second thoughts about how he earns a living. Of course, he is better qualified than any other character in the film to understand (if not yet fully appreciate) the implications of an invasion of privacy. Under Francis Ford Coppola’s brilliant direction, Harry begins to feel paranoid.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Conversation! Click Here

I view The Conversation as a dark film because its raises so many questions which seem even more relevant today than they were in 1974. How secure can any life be? Who is accumulating personal as well as professional data about whom? Why? Satellites can take photographs of a license plate. All of the data on computer hard drives can be recovered. DNA tests can determine whether or not a monarch was poisoned hundreds of years ago. In so many ways, “there is nowhere to run and nowhere to hide” from modern technologies. What intrigues me most about Harry Caul is his growing sense of dislocation and vulnerability as the conflict between his personal conscience and professional objectivity intensifies. The assignment for The Director (Robert Duvall) to conduct surveillance on Ann (Cindy Williams) and Mark (Frederic Forest) serves as a trigger which activates self-doubts and insecurities which Harry has presumably suppressed and denied for many years.

For me, the final scene is most memorable because it’s so ambiguous. To what extent has Harry invaded his own privacy? What has he learned? How will he now proceed with his personal life and career? For whatever reasons, only in recent years has this film received the praise it deserved but was denied when it first appeared almost 20 years ago. It seems to get even better each time it is seen again, especially in the DVD format which offers clearer image and sound as well as several excellent supplementary items such as commentaries by Coppola and his supervising editor Walter Murch as well as a “Close-Up on the Conversation” featurette.

“The Conversation” is one of those great little masterpieces of the 1970s that just so happens to be directed by Francis Ford Coppola. “The Conversation” tells the tale of Harry Caul, (geniously played by Gene Hackman) a surveillance expert who makes the mistake of getting personally involved in a disturbing assignment. Gene Hackman’s performance is so subtle, underplayed, and finely-tuned that it alone makes the film worthwhile. The script is fabulous, with a twist that makes “The Sixth Sense” look like kid’s stuff.

The DVD of “The Conversation” is great. To start off, it has good, animated menus. The theatrical trailer is nice, just for nostalgic purposes. There is also a featurette, “Close-Up on The Conversation”. It makes for a nice, brief look at the making of the film, and it’s fun to see Coppola so young. What really makes this DVD great though, are the two commentary tracks. The first is by the director himself, Francis Ford Coppola. Coppola’s commentary is one of the most comprehensive I’ve ever heard. If you don’t appreciate this movie now, you will after you’ve heard his commentary. The second commentary is by editor Walter Murch, which is also very good, especially if you are specifically interested in the editing process.

If you like Coppola, Hackman, or are just a sucker for a clever script, this DVD is for your collection.

Season 3 of Lost in Space had a very ambitious start. You could feel the excitement of the new direction the show tried early in this season. From the exciting and grand new theme to actually going into space more often, Season 3 did start out very well. However, the lazy writing to “comedic villain” of the week started to creep up by the middle of this volume.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Lost in Space - Season 3, Vol. 1! Click Here

Season 3, Volume 1 features some of the best episodes of the third season and a few approach the best or at least the most ambitious of the entire series. We start out with the action packed “Condemned of Space” where we see the Robinson’s lift off, dodge a comet, loose the Robot in Space and come across a frozen prison. We move on to “A Visit to a Hostile Planet” where we feature one of the best of the series (though logic is out the window) where our crew returns to Earth of the Past. We take a trip to a comical yet original premise in “Kidnapped in Space” and then the traditional “crash” in Hunter’s moon. And even when stuck on a planet for a while, they to attempt new fresh ideas, most notably some bonding between Don and Smith in “Space Primevals.” And bad creature effects aside, “Space Creature” gave us one of the deepest Lost in Space episodes to date.

Near the end of this volume, it would seem that the writers milked all they could out of the return to action and adventure and had to settle back to farcical fantasy and the results not very good. We get three episodes in a row that pretty much sign the death certificate of the entire series. “A Day at the Zoo” puts the Robinsons in a traveling Zoo. “Two Weeks in Space” features the Jupiter 2 as a resort for fugitive aliens, complete with a cash register and badminton equipment. And “Castles in Space”, while starting strong, falls on its face with a silver Mexican, Don making a mannequin in the likeness of a Mexican woman, and the robot getting drunk. If it weren’t for the excellent “The Anti-Matter Man”, this volume would have gone out on a horrible note.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Lost in Space - Season 3, Vol. 1! Click Here

Season 3, Volume 1 is presented in broadcast order I believe. This is a welcome change because prior video releases did not have them in this order and we often had illogical order to them being crashed and then back in space. The DVD transfers are good but again, a remaster would have been welcomed.

Season 3 rates way above season 2 in terms of quality but because of hitting rock bottom with some truly dreadful episodes, the show alas was doomed. Volume 1 of Season 3 features the strongest of the entire season.

LOST IN SPACE was a silly series. Of that there can be no doubt. It was, however, quite fun. Jonathan Harris, playing Dr. Zachary Smith, stole the show as a cowardly, greedy, lazy and incompetent stow away. He was always causing problems and good for a few laughs.

The series changed over the course of 3 seasons. It started out as a fairly serious science fiction series. By the second season, it had become nothing more than a campy comedy. The third season saw a reversion back towards the serious end of the spectrum but only just barely. The plots were, by a large, a bit more believeable but there was no doubt that this was as much comedy as drama. The cast did not take themselves too seriously and that contributed to the fun.

The series was noted for laughable costumes and special effects which used a bang, flash of smoke and disappearance/reappearance to solve any effects situation. What the series lacked in seriousness, costume, plot, and effects, it made up for with good humor and some of the richest color to appear on television at that time. It comes through well on the DVDs.

The episodes in this collection include:

One of the things I like about this particular collection is the music. The theme was different each season had had nothing to commend it until the third. For some reason, this theme song struck a chord in me as a young boy and I still like it. It is not great but, to me, it is memorable. Like the series itself, it is not to be taken seriously it is to be simply enjoyed for fun.

Condemned of Space - The Robinsons and crew are finally back in space again. They had no choice since the planet they had been stranded on was targeted by a rogue comet. As to be expected, they barely made it. No sooner than they out into space, Smith manages to jettison the robot by pushing the wrong button. It seems that the robot is lost for good when the ship finds its way to a space station for convicts. Lo and behold, the robot is there waiting for them. While Prof. Robinson and Maj. West go looking for some spare parts, Smith and Will go exploring. Smith wandering around in a prison is NOT a good idea.

Visit to a Hostile Planet - They almost make it. An accident takes the Jupiter II to Earth. They land but are mystified when they cannot contact anyone. Slowly, the awful truth sets in. They are not in their own time of 1997 but are in 1947 instead. People think they are hostile aliens and the reception is decidedly cold. Things get even worse when Smith decides to stay on earth to become some sort of a leader. As a bonus, Judy has more lines in this one than she has had in any episode for almost a year.

Kidnapped In Space - The Dr. Smith hears an SOS from another ship while he is listening to the radio. He is inclined to ignore it until he hears that there is a reward. That caught his attention. When he shows up he is told that he will be forced to do brain surgery on their leader. Failure to effect a cure will result in a death sentence for Smith. It gets more complicated when the leader turns out to be a computer. This is where the robot steps up to the plate. His services are liked so well that they do not want to let him go.

Hunter’s Moon - An emergency leads to a forced landing on a planet. The problem is that their presence interrupted a hunter during his hunt. The hunter is a crown prince and his suitability to the throne will be determined by how well he does in his hunting. He decides to make up his deficient score by hunting the Robinsons.

Space Primevals - Volcanoes are threatening the Jupiter II and Smith is sent with Maj. West to set of a charge to cap one of them. When they get near, they are captured by a tribe of cavemen who are ruled by a computer. Smith and West are sentenced to death. This one is kind of sick in that West and Smith hate each other but impending death draws them together. Seeing the robot do caveman dances does not make up for it.

Space Destructors - Smith stumbles into a cave with a machine that makes cyborgs. He decides to make his own personal army to conquer the galaxy. Needless to say, the others are not happy with this development.

The Haunted Lighthouse - This one features Penny who finds a castaway boy with strange powers to affect the minds of others. The Robinsons take him in just as they launch. While whizzing about, they come across a lighthouse from earth and its caretaker. They have an opportunity to get home but that means that the boy will not be able to get home. He is not pleased.

Flight Into the Future - Will and Smith accidentally land on a strange planet in the spacepod. A machine tries to convince them of a Rip Van Winkle event and that they are all far in the future. Meanwhile, the rest of the Jupiter II crew lands and tries to find them.

Collision of Planets - While the Jupiter II is grounded doing some repair work, the planet they are on is on a collision course with another planet. The inhabitants of that other planet dispatch a shiftless crew to destroy the Robinson’s planet. They are a bunch of inconsiderate hippies who will not grant the Robinsons a few extra hours to complete their repairs. I didn’t care for hippies in the 60s and they seem no better now.

Space Creature - The Jupiter II is captured by a living mist. If this is not bad enough the mist is evil and feeds on fear. It does all it can to frighten the travelers. Smith makes a likely target.

Deadliest of the Species - While flying through space, a foreign probe hitches a ride behind the Jupiter II. When they land, the probe crashes nearby. It turns out that it contains a very dangerous prison escapee and that escapee is a robot, a female robot. The Robinson’s robot naturally falls in love and is willing to work against his own family. This one was pretty sappy.

A Day at the Zoo - In intergalactic zookeeper captures the Robinsons to put on exhibit in his zoo. Smith manages to ingratiate himself and even manages to take over, lured to this course of action by his own avarice. He again manages to hack off everyone. This episode is more like those of the previous season in tone. The first appearance of the alien is so ludicrous that it is a relief to learn he is only wearing a mask to frighten his prey.

Two Weeks in Space - While most of the family is away, Will, Smith and the Robot are left behind at the Jupiter II. They get a call from an incoming spaceship and Smith sets up as a resort hotel to cash in on the visitors. The problem is that the visitors are fleeing robbers and are looking to set up their hosts for the fall.

Castles is Space - While working on a remote communications relay, Wlll, Dr. Smith, Maj. West, Judy and the robot come across a frozen alien sarcophagus. The revived alien turns out to be a beautiful princess from an ice planet. Another spacefarer shows up looking for her. He has been searching for her so that he can hold her for ransom. When West refuses to give the princess up, the bandit kidnaps Will.

The Anti Matter Man - Don’t expect antimatter to mean was physicists mean. In this case is means the “evil twin”. Professor Robinson gets kidnapped by his evil double from an evil parallel universe. The plan is to replace the real Prof so that he can stay in our universe. When he comes through, however, everyone notices that he does not act like himself.

“Collateral Damage” (2002)

The released date for this film was delayed after the tragic September 11 attacks on the World Trade Centre. I had heard quite a bit about the movie and was generally looking forward to it because I enjoyed The 6th Day, Arnie’s last effort. I didn’t expect it to be a life-changing experience to free our fear from terrorists after the horrific events of 9/11, but I expected to be entertained.

This movie far succeeded my expectations. It’s more intelligent, more entertaining, more interesting, more original, more well-acted than I could ever expect. Of course one thing that did disappoint me was once again Arnie went completely soft and the motivations are all good-willed and stuff, he’s not a cool bad[boy] anymore! However he still makes for a decent watch, also giving in a great performance as Gordon, our main man. Schwarzenegger was able to portray the tense expressions and great action stunts as well expect from him. But he also turned in what I found to be somewhat of a more subtle performance than usually, he had some great shock and dramatic acting scenes, and I think he could be really more than an action actor with big muscles, even if that’s what we’ll remember him as.

As for the rest of the cast, they turn in pretty decent performances. Cliff Curtis once again playing the bad guy is generally threatening. Francesca Neri (last year’s underused Hannibal star) does pretty good as the mum caught in the middle. John Turturro and John Leguizamo were great comic relief and entertained me a lot. But Leguizamo’s drug-making scenes were totally unnecessary to the whole plot of the movie.

This is yet another one of those twist-in-the-end movies (much like last year’s The 6th Day, Arnie’s box office hit) and it completely surprised me. The twist does have a couple of plot holes, but overall it worked. I was very pleased with the way it explained the twist, it made me understand the movie a whole lot better. Sometimes it doesn’t make such perfect sense though.

The action sequences in this movie are entertaining, and very well filmed. They also have a certain cleverness to them (they’re not just there because they are) and each of them delivers in a big way. They are also very well directed and the director of photography catches the atmosphere and important shots. The editing is very good (the fire especially looked very real) and the music used the perfect instruments (refreshingly different sounds!) to portray the excitement.

All that said, I felt the movie was a little too long at about 2 hours, and it had some unnecessary scenes (Elias Koteas wasn’t really essential, and neither was the whole John Leguizamo drug back-story). However, this movie remained an entertaining, enjoyable, smart and thought-provoking dramatic actioner.

MY GRADE: B+

Anyone who goes to an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie expecting stimulating dialogue and insightful human drama is only kidding himself. Like all of Schwarzenegger’s films, this is formulaic and unoriginal with great action footage. This is an unabashed Joe-Six-Pack guy flick. On that level it succeeds nicely.

Of course, this film can’t be compared strictly with mindless action flicks, because it pretends to be an international thriller, and here it fails spectacularly. It attempts to become philosophical, perfunctorily tossing in the idea that one man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter, but the script doesn’t dwell very long on this question and quickly proceeds to the next firework show.

The incursion of fireman Gordy Brewer (Arnold) into the terrorist camp is so far past implausible that it is comical. The G-men border on goofy. And the idea that terrorists would detonate a bomb with a cell phone is just silly. One wrong number (or telemarketing auto-dialer) and “wham”, mission over.

The twist ending is decent and at least it is not totally predictable, unlike the rest of the film. Director Andrew Jackson, best known for his direction of “The Fugitive”, keeps the film moving briskly and alternates effectively between action and suspense, without letting the improbability of the script act as an impediment.

Arnold is still in great shape and athletic as ever despite his heart valve replacement. I have to give him a lot of credit. After that surgery a lot of actors would have been happy to take less demanding roles. Arnold simply shrugs it off and continues where he left off. One still must wonder how long he can keep playing this kind of role.

This is a meld of his two favorite characters, action hero and tough guy with a big heart. He gives his standard performance, which is not so much a matter of acting, but rather Arnold playing Arnold with someone else’s name. Cliff Curtis is sinister as the terrorist and Francesca Neri is lovely and believable as his duplicitous wife.

By Arnold standards, this is not among his best. By international thriller standards, it is brainless and inadequate. As an action flick it is entertaining. Overall, however, I can’t give it much more than a 6/10. Action and Arnold junkies will want to see it. Others will probably want to pass.

This features my favorite Marvel Team Up ever! Whenever Stan Lee and Co. used to put together Spider-Man with Daredevil in the comics, it was always entertaining and exciting. Even the bad stories were still good with these two! This animated version is no exception as these two team up after a brief misunderstanding to take on the Kingpin (a major DD foe as well as Spider-Man) and his goons!

The extra episode with FF and Daredevil was also entertaining. A slight lighter DD in that one but no less intrigiging. A good addition to the other Spider-Man DVD’s out there!

By the way, I agree with the previous reviewer. It should’ve been called Spider-Man: Enter Daredevil.

It’s hard for me to pick out a favorite, from all the animated Spidey TV shows. Basically, I’ve always just been too busy being thankful that the wallcrawler’s on the small screen, in the first place. This dvd here, DAREDEVIL VS. SPIDER-MAN, is from the terrific 1990s Spider-Man cartoon. And while I’ve been in the recent habit of slamming dvd releases containing paltry sums of episodes, I’m just glad these suckers are made available at all in dvd. Because who the eff knows when we’ll get full season releases on this series? Me, I’m hunkering down for a looong wait.

Spidey is an icon, and his fans won’t suffer too many years elapsing without his being on TV or, nowadays, in a feature film. This particular cartoon incarnation ran from 1994 to 1998 for 65 episodes, and, even at its final stages, it was still well received enough to garner its own sequel series in 1999, the very short lived (and inferior) SPIDER-MAN UNLIMITED, which placed Spidey on Counterearth.

Back to the 1994 series: Most of the classic Spider-Man elements are here. From his everyday sadsack life to his familiar supporting cast, from his rogues’ gallery (excepting Sandman) to his sense of humor and bad guy baiting. And in this one, Peter is still attending college at Empire State U, even as he continues to shoot photos for the Daily Bugle.

The four episodes in DAREDEVIL VS. SPIDER-MAN are pulled from Season 3’s “Sins of the Fathers” story arc (Chapters VI - IX). Daredevil, by the way, appears in only the first two of these episodes (”Framed” and “The Man Without Fear”). When Peter Parker is hired by the Kingpin and then framed and arrested for a federal crime, blind attorney Matt Murdock’s services are mysteriously engaged in Peter’s defense. But when his civilian identity proves inadequate, Murdock dons the more action-friendly guise of Daredevil. Then comes the inevitable misunderstanding and skirmish between superheroes, followed by the teaming up, and ends with Parker exonerated and the Kingpin walking away unscathed.

One quibble I have is that I don’t buy the actor voicing Matt Murdock/Daredevil. For whatever reason, I just don’t think Daredevil’s voice is that deep.

The third episode, “The Ultimate Slayer,” revolves around Alistair Smythe and his unwilling transformation into a half-cyborg Spider Slayer, thanks to the Kingpin. Blaming Norman Osbourne for his father’s death, Smythe targets him for revenge. Meanwhile, Peter learns that Harry and Mary Jane are engaged.

In “Tombstone,” with the Daily Bugle about to publish an expose on Alicia Silvermane and her crime syndicate, the supertough, superstrong albino Tombstone is hired to put pressure on Bugle editor Robbie Robertson. And, surprisingly, these two share a past.

And, throughout all this, the mystical Madame Web occasionally steps in with some obscure, befuddling advice for Spidey, no doubt her way of prepping him for the cosmic events in the final season.

Compared to today’s standards, the animation here is more clumsy, not to mention that the occasional use of CG in cityscape sequences tends to clash with the 2D stuff. Also, the wallcrawler is at times depicted as too bulky a figure. However, the quality of the storytelling and the nice continuity make up for whatever the visuals may lack. Because of the restrictions placed on the series by the Fox network, it’s still an action packed series, but not as dynamic as it could’ve been. One of the funnier, more offbeat restrictions prevents Spidey from harming pigeons whenever he landed on a roof. Also, FOX had prohibited the inclusion of genuine firearms, so the bad guys and even the law enforcers made do with laser guns. It’s a bit jarring, and initially had me thinking that this Spidey was set in the near future.

For what it is, this dvd actually comes thru with decent special features: optional Stan Lee intros to each of the featured four episodes; a bonus episode (”King Pinned”) from the 1966 Spidey cartoon; another bonus episode (”And a Blind Man Shall Lead Them”), from the 1990s Fantastic Four cartoon guest-starring Daredevil, in which the FF lose their super powers; and Stan Lee’s Soapbox, as Stan reflects long and nostalgically about Daredevil (around 18 minutes).

Some trivia for fans of the show: Starting with the second year, the episodes in each season began to be linked in a single, season-long, over-arcing storyline. So, for example, the individual episode titles of Season 2 all fell under the “Neogenic Nightmare” banner. Season 3, under “The Sins of the Fathers” banner. Season 4, under “Partners in Danger.” And Season 5, “Forgotten Warriors.” I understand that the network heads were utterly ticked off at head writer John Semper, whose idea it was to insert long-running storylines.

Most of the dvds available about this series seem to focus on Season 3, which is the “Sins of the Fathers” story arc. Chapters II-V of it are collected in Spider-Man - The Ultimate Villain Showdown (Animated Series). Chapters X & XI are in Spider-Man - The Venom Saga (Animated Series) (along with Season 1’s 3-part “The Alien Costume” story). Chapters XII-XIV are found in Spider-Man - The Return of the Green Goblin (Animated Series) (with the first chapter of Season 4’s “Partners in Danger” arc). The only episode missing is part one of “Sins of the Fathers” (the one with Dr. Strange) and one can only wonder why it’s not included.

Personally, I’m waiting on the dvd release of the last season, which features the “Six Forgotten Warriors” saga, the 3-part “Secret Wars” (based on the Secret Wars comic book maxi-series) and the 2-part series finale “Spider-Wars,” as, in another reality, Peter and five other Spideys must go up against Spider-Carnage.

It’s gonna be a long wait, it looks like.

Ronald Reagan might have gotten the nickname of the “Gipper” from this 1940 bio-pic of legendary Notre Dame football coach Knute Rockne, but it was veteran character actor Pat O’Brien who had the role of a lifetime in the lead. James Cagney had lobbied hard for the role, but when the actor signed a petition supporting the Republican (and anti-Catholic) government in the Spanish Civil War, Notre Dame refused to okay him for the part. This was the first of only two movies ever filmed on the campus in South Bend, and if you do know that the other one was “Rudy” you should at least have been able to guess it had to be that one.

“Knute Rockne All American”, which was added to the National Film Registry in 1997, is a fairly standard bio-pic, evincing the almost documentary style that was standard at the time. We see how the young Rockne (played by Johnny Sheffield, a.k.a. Boy in the Johnny Weissmuller Tarzan movies) learned to love football, revolutionized the game with the forward pass, and coached his alma mater to glory with the Four Horsemen and George Gipp. The result is a long series of episodes from Rockne’s life that have varying degrees of appeal, such as when he picks up the idea for his backfield shift from watching chorus girls dance and experiments with the idea using his wife and their dinner guests.

Lots of footage of actual Notre Dame games are worked into the film, although I have no way of knowing if any of it is of the actual games being portrayed (I would be curious to know). O’Brien’s performance seems a tad wooden, but if you have ever seen actual film clips of Rockne you know he is in the ballpark. A lot of the charm of this film comes from the ethos of the original Rockne, an American legend who was probably the first famous victim of an airplane crash. The result is not great, but certainly compelling (plus we all learn the correct pronunciation of his name as being Ka-Nute).

Reagan’s supporting role is deservedly memorable. That same year he would get to play third banana George Armstrong Custer to Errol Flynn and Olivia DeHavilland in “The Santa Fe Trail” and would provide his best performance in “King’s Row” before military service in World War II effectively derailed his acting momentum and ultimately set his life on a different path.

Final Note: While there is little doubt that Rockne invented the forward pass, there is debate over one aspect of this film. In his first scene as George Gipp, Reagan is sitting around doing nothing when Rockne orders him to go in at halfback to play against the varsity and run the ball. Gipp asks “How far?” and proceeds to run it back all the way. After crossing the goal line he bounces the ball off the endzone, instead of laying it down for the “touchdown.” An argument has been made that this was the first spike in the history of football. At least it is the first “recorded” spike. Did the current tradition of choreographed celebrations all stem from what Ronald Reagan did in this 1940 film? You decide if that is yet another part of the Reagan legacy that is being reconsidered this week.

I think the true testament to this movie’s appeal is that it is still watchable after more than 60 years to both hard-core football fans and those(me)who can’t tell a bunt from a punt.

“Knute Rockne, All American” is based on the life of one of Notre Dame University’s most ingenious and beloved coaches. The movie follows Rockne’s early beginnings from his family’s emigration to America, to his days as a Notre Dame student, his career as coach, and his tragic demise.

It’s an inspiring movie tribute about football’s evolution and Notre Dame’s struggle to establish itself out of mid-western obscurity; but it is primarily about a man. A man who was a mentor to the many he coached and a revolutionary of the sport of football. By the end of the movie I came to have a deep respect for Knute Rockne as a man of intellect, passion and integrity.

Pat O’Brien does a stirring portrayal of Rockne. My one complaint regarding his performance is that he is too mature-looking to portray Rockne during his early years and perhaps they should have had another actor for those scenes.

Another little gem is seeing a young Ronald Reagan as the ill-fated George Gipp. His deathbed scene is one of the most touching moments in the whole movie.

I found the action sequences a little boring and homogenous, (perhaps followers of football will feel differently) but it does not distract from the rest of the movie. My only other complaint is the soundtrack, which seems to consist of the Notre Dame fight song played over and over again in 115 different renditions.

It’s worth noting that although the cover is colorized the movie is in black and white.
